Celebrate the holiday season with a truly unique light display. From Oct. 12, 2024, through Jan. 20, 2025, the Desert Botanical Garden invites you to experience the convergence of light and nature with Light Bloom by HYBYCOZO. This limited-time exhibit brings a series of stunning geometric light installations that illuminate the beauty of the Sonoran Desert landscape in a new way. As the sun sets, each of the mesmerizing displays comes to life, casting intricate shadows and vibrant hues across the garden’s paths and plants. Wander the trails and let the enchanting installations transport you to a magical realm where the natural world meets the abstract.

Light Bloom offers a drastically different viewing experience before and after sunset. Check the sunset time before your visit and plan accordingly. Additionally, the garden is open until 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and until 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. This exhibit is included with general admission. For additional information, visit the Desert Botanical Garden website.

Art Installations & Points of Interest

As you approach the entrance of the Desert Botanical Garden, the first installation you’ll notice is the vibrant green blown-glass fixtures perch up to the right of the main walkway. These sculptures harken back to Dale Chihuly’s past installations at the garden (2008, 2022).

Nestled along the trail, you’ll spot a larger-than-life blue sculpture set against the cacti. Originally part of the 2022 exhibit, Playing with Stars: Rotraut at Desert Botanical Garden, this piece is now a permanent fixture as well. The abstract and semi-representational form leaves room for visitors to make their own connections to the surrounding environment and invite them to experience their own sense of playfulness and joy.

The Fine Family Contemplation Garden is a multisensory space that features a circular shape is flanked with seating on either side and completed by a large, reflective water feature mirroring the image of the surrounding cactus on the surface. Visit during the day to walk the meditative labyrinth shaped in tapestry-like swirls of terrazzo, or closer to sunset to catch a perfect view of the Papago butte as the glow of the sun transforms the sky to the west.

At the Ardie & Steve Evans Cardon Plaza sits a mosaic of stained and engraved glass that’s illuminated in uniquely different ways — including a colorful bouquet of colors that reflect across the ground — as the sun makes its way across the sky each day.

Since opening in 2017, the Cohn Family Butterfly Pavilion has invited guests to explore the butterfly life cycle by interacting with thousands of live butterflies each spring and fall. This 3,200 square-foot open-air structure also features lush garden plantings, a water feature, engaging programming and state-of-the-art nursery space.

For live music, head to Ullman Terrace. And to recreate photos of the sky-high cacti lining the path near a historic house, look for the Webster Auditorium.
