It’s the summertime and I love the national pastime of compulsive binge watching favorite shows on Netflix or stored on my DVR. You’ll find me hunkered down in front of the old flat screen over entire weekends, well into the wee hours of the a.m. But let’s face it–after too many glassy-eye hours of this insanity, I have to come up for air and also the old eyeballs need a break. Fortunately, there are some great Tempe nightlife options to entice me to break free of my binge watching habit. Here are a few of my favorite places to go when the sun goes down.
The Marquee is one of Tempe’s top performing entertainment venues. With over 150 performances a year, The Marquee brings in some of the biggest names in the music industry today. The Marquee is the place to catch all your favorite bands when they come into town. And, it’s close to Downtown Tempe so you can grab dinner before the show or go out for cocktails afterwward. Tickets are available in person, online, or by phone.

If you feel like tickling your funny bone, head over to the legendary Tempe Improv. Tempe Improv brings some of the hottest talents from around the country and puts them center stage right here in Tempe. A two-drink minimum is required for all ticket holders.
930 E. University Dr., Tempe, AZ 85281
Tempe Center for the Arts
Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) is my one-stop place for all kinds of entertainment. It’s like one big variety show featuring a range of live music, comedy, theatre and dance throughout the week. Plus, it’s a beautiful venue with great views of Tempe Town Lake. This summer, you can enjoy their “draw” exhibition in the Gallery at the TCA and workshops related to the exhibit for both children and adults.
700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ 85281
There’s just something about live music performed on an outdoor stage where you can get really close to the performers, which is why I love going to Tempe Marketplace on weekend evenings. Tempe Marketplace shares local talents every Friday and Saturday at their District Stage. During the summer they keep things cool with plenty of misters. You can sit back and enjoy, or show off your moves to the music of local musicians (and sometimes national acts as well) while you’re shopping, eating or just enjoying a nice evening out. All shows start at 7 p.m.
2000 E. Rio Salado Pkwy., Tempe, AZ 85281
AMC Centerpoint 11
Seeing a flick will do the trick, especially with all the great summer movies coming to the big screen. And, there’s no need to rush to be first in line to get a good seat when you go to AMC Centerpoint 11 in Downtown Tempe. This theater lets you choose your seats ahead of time when you pay for your tickets, so you can show up right before the opening credits. The plush power recliners make you feel like you’re watching the latest movies right from the comfort of your own home.
730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, AZ 85281
Downtown Tempe is one of my favorite places for live music and just a fun night on the town. On practically every night of the week you’ll hear live music being performed in establishments throughout this pedestrian friendly area. From dueling pianos, to rock, to hip hop to country, you will find it somewhere along Mill Avenue and the adjacent streets. Enjoying the hot sounds of live music in Downtown Tempe is a cool thing to do on a warm summer evening. And, you can grab a cold beer or refreshing beverage at places like Culinary Dropout, Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, Pedal Haus Brewery and lots more. Visit the Downtown Tempe website for more information.
