As one of Arizona’s most-visited attractions, Tempe Town Lake is the unmistakable epicenter of outdoor activities in the Valley of the Sun. Spanning more than two miles in length, this oasis beckons adventurers on a quest to pedal, paddle, row or sail across its tranquil waters. Along the shoreline, which includes sand volleyball courts, a marina and 5 miles of paths, the lake’s scenic atmosphere provides an equally stunning backdrop for fitness seekers, nature lovers, photographers and scene seekers — especially during golden hour.
Located on the lake’s south shore, Tempe Beach Park has been a gathering place for families, visitors and community for more than a century. Today, the park offers 25 acres of paths and trails, picnic areas, ramadas, art and scenery — and plays host to many cultural celebrations, music festivals and signature events that fill the calendar each year.
Conveniently located in a kiosk on the lake’s south side (near the Historic Mill Avenue Bridge), Boat Rentals of America – Tempe Town Lake offers visitors the opportunity to rent a variety of watercraft. Choose from motorized donut boats (for up to 10 passengers), pedal boats, kayaks or stand-up paddle boards for a duration of 1 or 2 hours.
With self-service available 24/7, Northshore Watersport Rentals offers kayak (single or double) and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals for use on Tempe Town Lake. This recreational outfitter is located on the north shore of Tempe Town Lake, near the Tempe Town Lake Marina Boat Launch. Pricing, hours and availability on their website.
For a 360-degree perspective, the lake offers a scenic 5-mile loop that invites walkers, cyclists and runners to enjoy. The path is flat, paved and well-marked and dotted with more than 20 pieces of public art.
Northshore Watersport Rentals, Boat Rentals of America and The Bicycle Cellar offer a variety of rental options for biking around the lake. For a zippier experience, that includes a history lesson and a hike, Tempe E-Bike Tours guides private groups of up to 20 around the lake and Papago Park. You’ll also find electric scooters perched throughout Tempe, including popular spots around the lake.
Across the lake from Downtown Tempe sits a sandy stretch of Tempe Town Lake shoreline as well as grassy berms and the SRP Town Lake Marina. The North Shore connects to the south shore via the Mill Avenue Bridge (to the east) and the Elmore Pedestrian Bridge (to the west) and offers unparalleled views of the skyline, especially as the sun sets and the reflections of the city lights dance across the water.
